Scheduling Your FAA Part 107 Test: A Step-by-Step Guide

Passing the FAA Part 107 Aeronautical Knowledge Test is the first major milestone on your path to becoming a certified commercial drone pilot. Before you can legally fly a drone for business or profit, you need to take and pass this exam at an FAA-authorized testing center. Here's everything you need to know about how to schedule your test, what to prepare, and what to expect on exam day.

Step 1: Obtain Your FAA Tracking Number (FTN)

Before you can schedule your Part 107 exam, you must have an FAA Tracking Number (FTN). This number uniquely identifies you in the FAA’s system and is required for registering for any FAA knowledge test.
To get your FTN:

  • Visit https://iacra.faa.gov
  • Register as an applicant
  • Complete your profile
  • Once registered, you’ll be assigned an FTN instantly

Make sure all the personal details you enter match your legal documents (driver’s license, passport, etc.).

Step 2: Create a PSI Account

FAA knowledge tests are administered by PSI, the FAA’s official testing partner. You must create an account on PSI’s website to schedule your test.

  1. Go to https://faa.psiexams.com
  2. Click “Create an Account”
  3. Enter your FTN and your last name
  4. Complete your profile and verify your email

Once your account is set up, you can search for available test centers and schedule your exam.

Step 3: Find a Testing Center

Use PSI’s location search tool to find an FAA-authorized testing center near you. You can search by city, zip code, or state.
Part 107 exams are offered at hundreds of locations nationwide, including aviation schools, community colleges, and testing centers. Make sure to choose a convenient location where you can arrive on time and comfortably take the test.

Step 4: Choose a Date and Time

Available dates and times vary depending on the testing center. Some locations offer weekend and evening appointments, while others operate only during regular business hours.
When scheduling, consider:

  • Giving yourself enough time to study and prepare
  • Choosing a day when you’re not rushed or distracted
  • Booking at least a week or two in advance to secure your ideal slot

The exam fee is $175 (as of current FAA guidance), paid at the time of scheduling through the PSI website.

Step 5: Prepare Required Documents

Before test day, make sure you have:

  • A valid government-issued photo ID (e.g., driver's license or passport)
  • Your FTN (you’ll need it to check in)
  • Booking at least a week or two in advance to secure your ideal slot

Arrive at least 30 minutes early. Late arrivals may not be admitted and could lose their test fee.

Step 6: Take the Test

The Part 107 exam consists of:

  • 60 multiple-choice questions
  • A 2-hour time limit
  • A minimum passing score of 70%
You’ll be tested on topics including airspace classifications, weather, regulations, loading and performance, and emergency procedures.
After the test, your score will be available immediately. If you pass, your next step will be to apply for your Remote Pilot Certificate through IACRA.
