How to Register Your Drone with the FAA

Once you’ve earned your Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate, the next critical step is registering your drone with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Whether you’re planning to fly commercially or for fun, drone registration is a legal requirement—and it’s quick, easy, and affordable.

Why You Need to Register

Under FAA regulations, any drone used for commercial purposes must be registered, regardless of its weight. If your drone weighs more than 0.55 pounds (250 grams), you must also register it for recreational use. Commercial pilots must register each drone individually.

Where to Register: FAA DroneZone

To register, visit the official FAA DroneZone portal: https://faadronezone-access.faa.gov/. This is the only official FAA registration site—avoid third-party sites that charge more or offer fake registration services.

Step-by-Step Registration Process

1. Create an FAA DroneZone Account

Use your email address to sign up. Make sure you register under the "Part 107" section for commercial use.

2. Provide Your Details

Enter your name, mailing address, and contact information. You’ll also provide details about the drone you’re registering—make, model, and serial number.

3. Pay the Fee

The FAA charges a $5 registration fee per drone, valid for three years.

4. Receive Your FAA Registration Number

After payment, you’ll receive a unique FAA registration number. This number must be clearly marked on the outside of your drone using a label, engraving, or permanent marker.

5. Print Your Registration Certificate

Keep a digital or printed copy of your FAA registration certificate with you whenever you fly.

Important Reminders

Registering your drone is not just about following the rules—it’s about ensuring accountability, safety, and professionalism in every flight. Taking a few minutes to register is a crucial step toward launching a compliant and successful drone operation.
